Hide the drives(c:,d:,e:,...etc) in Ur Comp

This is a great trick you can play on your friends. To disable the display of local or networked drives when you click My Computer.

1.Go to start->run.Type regedit.
Now go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Win
dows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Now in the right pane
create a new DWORD item and name it NoDrives (it is case sensitive).
Now modify it's value and set it to 3FFFFFF (Hexadecimal) .
Now restart your Computer.
So, now when you click on My Computer, no drives will be shown(all gone...).

To enable display of drives in My Computer, simply delete this DWORD item that you created.Again restart your Computer. You can now see all the drives again. Magic........lol.

Troubleshooting Tips for a New Sound Card

No sound is heard from audio (music) CDs
Various conditions may cause this problem. To troubleshoot, check the following:
1.Microsoft Volume Control or your mixer program mute options and volume sliders.
2.Connect headphones to the stereo phone jack on your CD-ROM drive’s front panel; adjust the volume control settings on the drive. If there is sound from your headphones, check the CD audio cable connection from the CD-ROM drive to the audio card.
3.Ensure the speakers are properly connected to the audio card’s output connector.

Joystick port is not working To troubleshoot, check the following:
1.The audio card joystick port conflicts with another joystick port in the system. Disable the audio card joystick port, and use the system’s joystick port.
2.The joystick drivers, MSJSTICK.DRV and VJOYD.VXD, may not be installed. Uninstall the joystick, then reinstall to load the drivers. The drivers should come with the driver CD or floppy diskette with your sound card.

Computer hangs or restarts during installationA hardware conflict may cause the computer to hang or restart during the installation procedure. Check the following to resolve the conflict:
1.A hardware conflict with another device in your system.
2.Previously installed sound card hardware or software needs to be removed.
3.The audio card is not seated in the slot properly.
4.PCI bus mastering devices may be interfering with the operation of the audio card. Temporarily remove non-essential PCI bus mastering devices.

Resolving hardware conflictsHardware conflicts occur when two or more devices contend for the same resources. Conflicts between your audio card and another device may occur regarding the I/O address, IRQ line, or DMA channel:
1.Right-click the My Computer icon on your desktop, and select Properties. The System Properties dialog appears.
2.Click the Device Manager tab. In the Device Manager, a plus sign(+) represents an expandable list of items. A minus sign (-) represents an expanded list. A circled exclamation mark denotes a conflict.
3.Double-click Sound, video, game controllers. A list of multimedia devices appears.
Select your audio card.
4.Choose the Propertis button.
5.Click the Resources tab.
6.Uncheck the Use automatic settings option.
7.Change "Settings based on:" if alternate settings are available.
8.Determine the conflict by reviewing the "Conflicting device list".
9.Select the conflicting item in the "Resource Settings" list.
10.Click the Change Settings button.
11.Use the mouse to select a new setting.
12.Select OK to close each of the properties windows, and restart your computer.

Audio card is not automatically detectedTo manually configure your audio card for Windows 95/98:
1.Click "Start" on the taskbar, and select Settings from the Start menu.
2.Select Control Panel. The Control Panel group appears.
3.Double-click the Add New Hardware icon. The Add New Hardware Wizard dialog appears.
Select Next to continue.
4.Choose Yes to have Windows search for new hardware, then select Next
5.Select Next to continue.
6.Select Finish, and follow the prompts to complete the new hardware installation.

CD does not automatically run when you insert it in the driveTo enable the "Audio insert notification" feature:
1.Right-click the My Computer icon on your desktop, and select Properties. The System Properties dialog appears.
2.Click the Device Manager tab. A list of devices appears.
3.Double-click CD-ROM, and select your CD-ROM drive.
4.Choose the Properties button. The CD-ROM drive properties dialog appears.
5.Choose the Settings tab.
6.Click the "Auto insert notification" option to enable.
7.Select OK until all Properties dialogs are closed, and restart Windows for the changes to take effect.

No sound is heard from speakersVerify the following:
1.Check the Microsoft Volume Control or the Audio Mixer Program mute options and volume sliders.
2.Ensure the speakers are properly connected to the audio card’s output connector.
3.Check the volume control and power connection of the speakers, if they are amplified. (Refer to the speakers documentation for detailed information).
4.Ensure a hardware conflict does not exist between your audio card and another device in your system.
5.PCI bus mastering devices may be interfering with the operation of the audio card. Temporarily remove non-essential PCI bus mastering devices. If the device is a display card, upgrade the display card drivers, or set the card to the default Windows VGA mode.

If you are experiencing no sound only during audio CD playback, see "No sound is heard from audio (music) CDs" above.

Static sounds are heard in wave filesCheck to see if the static sounds are heard in all wave files. If the difficulty occurs only with certain games, refer to the software manufacturer’s documentation. To troubleshoot static sounds heard in all wave files:
1.Try different resource settings for the audio card, or set the card to use low DMA.
2.Move the audio card to another PCI slot. Feedback from the power supply or another device may be responsible.

Guide to burn files and folders to CD and DVD on-the-fly

  • First, Insert an empty CD or DVD into your recorder.
  • Start new compilation by clicking on the Menu "File"->"New"->"Data CD/DVD Image".

  • Click to set the properties of data CD/DVD image.

In the "File/Directory names length" section, you can specify the ISO level for the length of the names. ISO Level 1 means that the names cannot be more than 11 characters long for DOS and Windows 3.1(8 for the name and 3 for the extension). ISO Level 2 means that the names can be up to 31 characters long for Windows 95 and higher. ISO Level 2 will be best in most cases - if you know that CD must also be readable on DOS or Windows 3.1 system then you should select ISO level 1. ISO 9660:1999 v2 means that the names can be up to 207 characters long for some Linux and Unix system.

In the "CD File System" Section, you can specify which CD File system for the data CD. ISO-9660 is a standard CD-ROM file system that allows you to read the same CD-ROM whether you are on the PC UNIX Linunx Mac or other major computer. Joliet is an extension of the ISO 9660 standard, developed by Microsoft to allow CD and DVD to be recorded using long filenames, and using the Unicode international character set. Joliet allows you to use filenames up to 64 characters in length, including space. Rock Ridge is an extension of the ISO 9660 file system designed to support Unix file system information (such as longer filenames and deeper directory structures). Apple HFS/HFS+ is the "Hierarchical File system", the native volume format used on modern Macintosh computers. with HFS/HFS+ volume format, CD and DVD can be readable on Mac OS. UDF (Universal Disk Format) is a file system developed by OSTA. With UDF volume format, data can be written to a CD or DVD in the same way as to a hard disk or floppy disk.

Once you have selected your settings, Click Ok to apply.

  • Change the root name you can give your CD or DVD and overtype the default name. you can use letter A-Z, digits 0-9 and the underscore character(_).

  • If File Browser Panel is not open yet, you can open it by clicking button.

  • Add files and folders for the CD and DVD using Drag&Drop editing by simply clicking on the required files in the file browser and dragging them into the compilation panel.

You also can select files and folders in the file browser and add files and folders for the CD and DVD by clicking button.

When adding directories, the directory structure is moved across too, i.e. if you drag an entire folder into the compilation panel, the folder will be created on the CD you wish to burn.

If you drag a lot of individual files however this may affect the clarity of the CD's contents. To avoid this you can create new folders within the compilation panel by clicking button. The folder you have just created is assigned the name "New Folder" by default and can be renamed immediately.
  • Click to open the burn dialog box.

  • Choose your CD/DVD recorder, Choose write speed. Important: you must remember to clear the "Finalize CD" checkbox when creating the first session of a MultiSession CD or DVD. With a Multisession CD or DVD, this checkbox is only checked for the last session of the CD or DVD. This setting write protects the CD or DVD and no further writing is possible.
  • Click "Burn it!" to start the burn process.

Guide to append files and folders to CD and DVD

  • Insert the Multisession CD or DVD you wish to continue into the recorder.
  • Continue Multisession CD or DVD by clicking menu "File"->"Continue Multisession Disc".

  • Click to set the properties of data CD/DVD image.
  • Click to open the burn dialog box.

  • Choose your CD/DVD recorder, Choose write speed. Important: you must remember to clear the "Finalize CD" checkbox when continuing the session of a MultiSession CD or DVD. With a Multisession CD or DVD, this checkbox is only checked for the last session of the CD or DVD. This setting write protects the CD or DVD and no further writing is possible.

Replacing Laptop Hard Drives - Illustrated how to replace a laptop hard drive

removing laptop battery The first step I take when working on any laptop or notebook computer is to remove the battery. Even if the power button is well protected, like under the closed lid of the screen, it doesn't mean that the power might not come on due to a mechanical jolt or a short when you're working on the innards, so the best bet is to just get the battery out of there.
Laptop batteries generally require two actions to remove them. In this case, the lock is on the front edge of the case, and it slides to the side. After the lock is released, the battery slides back just an inch or so to release from the connector, after which it's lifted out and removed.
open laptop hard drive access panel There are two basic scenarios for laptop hard drive replacement, the easy access scenario and thetake the whole laptop apart scenario. This Toshiba notebook is the easy access scenario, at least as far as exposing the drive goes. The hard drive is concealed behind a removable panel on the bottom of the laptop, which is held in place with one long screw.
As we lift the lid over the hard drive, you can see the long plastic tube that serves both as a screw guide and as a mechanical support. It should be immediately apparent that the hard drive isn't going anywhere without the cage either being removed first or coming with it. hard drive in notebook
unscrewing hard drive cage Closer inspection shows that this hard drive mounting system relies on the cage being attached to the hard drive before the hard drive is installed in the laptop. The only things that secures the hard drive and cage in the laptop are the power and data connector on one end, and a spring steel tab on this end. The picture to the left shows how the whole edge of the cage has to be pushed in to get the tab past the the plastic stub that holds it into place.
Once the locking tab clears the stub projection that holds the hard drive cage in place, the end still has to be lifted up till it clears the bottom of the laptop. There's simply no room within the laptop bay to pull the hard drive back and disengage from the mating connector. One the cage clears the laptop, it takes a bit of force to pull the hard drive out on as shallow an angle as possible. removing hard drive from laptop
replacing hard drive in laptop cage The first step in replacing the hard drive is removing the cage from the old drive, which is held in place with four screws. Make sure you note which way the cage goes on the old drive before you take it off, because it will need to be mounted on the new drive the same way, even though more than one orientation may be possible. You can see the corner of the new drive in the picture, in case you thought we only had one:-)
Once the replacement hard drive is mounted in the cage (same brand in this instance, though it doesn't need to be), the whole assembly can be reinstalled in the laptop. Again, keep the drive on as shallow an angle as possible, ie, close to the bottom of the laptop, as you slide the pins into the connector. The close tolerances on the laptop bay usually make it impossible to mate the connector improperly. IBM travelstar connector
securing laptop hard drive If you worry about prying the drive against the connector when depressing the end of the cage so the tab clears the locking ear, you can hold the top edge of the cage out as you pry the tab in, as I'm doing here. Laptop hard drives aren't terribly rugged, they're so light and slim that I hate putting any more mechanical stress on them than I have to. Replacing laptop hard drives is a bit nerve racking for people who haven't done it before, but as long as you don't use an unreasonable amount of force, it should work out fine.
We replace the lid and use the long screw to reattach it to the bottom of the laptop. The emergency restore CD that comes with the laptop is used to reload all the software on the PC, but your data is gone unless you backed it up.Since the laptop hard drive we replaced in this example was a total brick, I figured I'd open it up (below) so you could take a look inside. The shiny circular thing is called a platter, on which the data is magnetically recorded and read by a read/write head on the end of the arm (currently in its park position away from the platter). The noise you here when your hard drive is operating is the arm swinging in and out over the surface of the platter, which spins under the read write head to provide access to all the usable locations on the drive. replacing notebook access panel

Temperature Controller --Arjun

Purpose

The purpose of this software is to controller the temperature of industry equipments, rooms, boiler, electric generators, steam turbines, combustion engine etc. This project is specifically designed to maintain the temperature of the room by controlling Electric Fan and Electric Bulb or Heater.

Working

This software will continuously monitor the temperature of room (Ambient Temperature). If the ambient temperature increases above the desired temperature level then the software will switch on the Electric Fan. On the other hand if the ambient temperature decreases below the desired level then the software will switch on the Electric Heater or Bulbs and switch off Electric Fan. If the ambient temperature is equal to the desired temperature level then the software will switch off both Electric Fan and Heater.

Project Analysis

This project is divided into two parts

The Hardware side
The Software side

The Hardware Side

First of all I have designed the hardware. The components that I have used and the circuit diagram is shown below.

The Software Side

The software is created in Turbo Basic. The software reads the data from the Standard Parallel port shown above from pin No. 2 to 9. It processes the input data and then compares it with the user desired temperature entered by the user.

The picture shown above all is the first animated window that appears when the user runs the software. Then the software directs the user to enter the temperature he wants to maintain. Afterwards the software starts monitoring the temperature. The window that appears next is shown below.

This window remains there until you press Esc key. With the help of this software you can enter desired temperature that falls in the range from 0 to 105°C.
